Sponsored by an education grant and art educator Kim Nofsinger, in partnership with Side Street Studio Arts, I brought an arts integration and mixed media mural program to an elementary school in LaCrosse, WI, Summer 2021.
The program was designed to supplement a lack of arts programming for one aspect of the school's population, and to bring contemporary arts exposure to the other aspect.
Both 9+ ft in diameter collage murals on board and the required classrooms, facilitation to co-create with K-5th grades was made possible by myself and fellow teaching artists Ivette De Santiago and Nick Mataragas.
Each grade contributed to collage and paper sculptures that make up both large-scale artworks. Students learned about the elements and principles of design, the grid system needed to structure the artworks, chemistry and material interactions for making paper pulp, language arts and how to describe about the art-making process, and more.
